You’ll then acknowledge you can be†¦anyone you choose†¦anytime you pick. Your old individual story is simply the lift pitch you tell whenever opportunity comes thumping that keeps you covered in a solace bubble. You are not your past. You are not your future. You are at this moment. That’s it. That’s all you ever get without a moment's delay. What's more, you can start making another self-story when you choose you’re completely ready. Include Some Spontaneity It’s really clever when you consider it, attempting to be unconstrained. Here’s the arrangement, each and every day of your life (when you’re not cavern staying in your room) you’re went up against with huge amounts of decisions. Some more unconstrained than others. Those are ordinarily the ones your old individual account attempts to get you far from (in light of the fact that they change what your identity is). Choose to be progressively unconstrained starting now and into the foreseeable future. When you work out this container rundown of fears, start to pursue them down (sensibly speaking, no covering yourself alive or anything). You get the thought. How Poe Observes the Characteristics Essay

How Poe Observes the Characteristics of the American Gothic Literature Tradition in â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado† Edgar Allan Poe was bound to an existence of haziness and craziness. As the child of voyaging entertainers, Poe was surrendered to the repulsions of the world at a youthful age. Poe is for the most part viewed as the dad of American Gothic Literature, a guide to such creators as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville. The tales that Poe recorded are predominant in present day times, making classes, for example, blood and gore movies and sci-fi films. â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado† is one of Poe’s most noteworthy short stories, that encapsulates the American Gothic Literature Tradition through the dull story. In this short story Montresor, the hero, has a quarrel against Fortunato, a man that has wronged him a huge number of times. To do his vengeance, Montresor continues to bait Fortunato into the tombs of his basement, promising him amontillado, an uncommon wine. At long last, Fortunato is bound to a divider, while at the same time being buried by Montresor. The imagery, settings, and storyteller utilized by Poe in â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado† are the cliché components to Southern American Gothic Literature To start, Edgar Allan Poe uses his man centric dominance of imagery to hold fast to the qualities of The American Gothic Literature Tradition in â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado.† Poe utilizes the image of Fortunato’s clothing to depict his character as rash and naïve. He decorates â€Å"a tight fitting gathering striped dress and his head was overcomed by the funnel shaped top and bells† (Poe 1). He was dressed as an entertainer; this emblematic portrayal depicts Fortunato as a blockhead. Trent Lorcher touts â€Å"This is Montresor’s method of mortifying Fortunato further for the outrage he has caused Montresor. Montresor needs Fortunato to pass on like the imbecile that he is â€Å"(Lorcher 1). Furth ermore, the amontillado is an image inside itself for duplicity. Amontillado is an uncommon and great wine, a critical compulsion to one who is a wine authority, for example, Fortunato. The amontillado represents Montresor’s duplicity of Fortunato; at the minor notice of the amontillado by Montresor, Fortunato shouts â€Å"To your vaults!† (Poe 1). Lorcher legitimizes this â€Å"Fortunato’s energy for good wineâ leaves him defenseless to sweet talk, bootlicking which Montresor provides† (Lorcher 1). Another image is the manner by which Montresor discards Fortunato, which portrays Montresor’s disdain and contempt for Fortunato. Montresor murders Fortunato in the most uncommon style, he dividers him up inside a cell. In executing Fortunato in this mortifying technique, it implies Montresor’s genuine loathing for Fortunato and the need to dispatch of him in a lowering approach. Poe depicts this entombment in such a way: â€Å"I constrained the last stone into position and put it up†¦. for the half of a century no human has upset [his bones]† (Poe 1). R.J. Russ underpins this suspicion by expressing: â€Å"The way he really executed Fortunato was unbearable and brutal. This demonstrates how irate he was at Fortunato†¦ Montresor [did] it since he needed Fortunato to kick the bucket in a [embarrassing] design that Montresor accepted he deserved† (Russ 1). From Fortunato’s closet, to the beguiling wine, to the mode that Fortunato was executed; Poe utilizes these images to watch the attributes of the American Gothic Literature. Just as utilizing imagery to hold fast to the components of the American Gothic Literature custom, Poe additionally digs into the bent considerations of a vindictive storyteller. Poe utilizes the elements of a convoluted arrangement, an unreasonable narrator, and respect of previously mentioned Montresor to create â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado† into an American Gothic great. Montresor recounts to the account of his vengeance against Fortunato about fifty years after the live internment. He is pleased with his multifaceted arrangement to get revenge. Through symbolism, Poe portrays a planned homicide as a rranged by a heartless Montresor. â€Å"Throwing them aside, I before long revealed an amount of building stone and mortar† (Poe 7). The earlier arranging required to execute this unpredictable arrangement is clear, as Montresor made the perfect circumstance t get his retribution. Womack states, â€Å"By the finish of Poe’s story, Montresor has gotten his vengeance against clueless Fortunato, whose desire for wine has driven him to his own death† (Womack 5). So as to proceed, Montresor supplies the debilitating Fortunato with liquor to additionally bring down the faculties of the hasty Fortunato. The draw of Amontillado is a lot for the sprightly Fortunato, ready to stumble to his demise at the guarantee of a sample of the fine sherry. Montresor assaults the pride of Fortunato while referencing that Luchresi might be a superior epicurean of wine, in reality driving Fortunato to announce that â€Å"Luchresi can't tell Amontillado from Sherry† (Poe 3). This second demonstrates not just the pride basic to Montresor’s plan for retaliation, yet in addition the poise that experts of wine, for example, Montresor and Fortunato have. This pride is amplified in Montresor more so than Fortunato, as appeared by the narrator’s opening line, â€Å"The thousand wounds of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, however when he wandered upon affront I pledged revenge† (Poe 1). The affront of Montresor is capital punishment for Fortunato, however the idea of the affront nor the outcome upon Montresor’s poise is portrayed. Montresor’s pride is the idea of his family as the adage upon the family peak, â€Å"Nemo me impune lacessit† (Poe 5). Essentially, Poe shows that Montresor’s family line contains a similar pride by making an adage saying â€Å"No one assaults me with impunity† (Poe 5). Poe further difficulties the unwavering quality and character of the storyteller, and in truth â€Å"Poe d oesn't plan for the peruser to identify with Montresor in light of the fact that he has been wronged by Fortunato, but instead to judge him† (Womack 4). The storyteller advances all through the story as his madness develops, and question is made in the peruser with regards to the unwavering quality of Montresor. As the finish of his deed moves close, the anguished yells of Fortunato are heard when the sureness of fate at long last rises upon the hostage. The story proceeds, â€Å"I answered to the shouts of him who clamored. I re-resounded, I helped, I outperformed them in volume and in quality. I did this, and the clamourer developed still† (Poe 8). The crazy storyteller is a trait of Poe’s American Gothic Literature convention, a trademark that proceeds in the Cask of Amontillado with Montresor, who relates the story about 50 years after the homicide of Fortunato. Womack explains upon Poe’s interest with the frantic recorder, saying, â€Å"Once once more, the peruser is welcome to dig into the inward operations of a vile mind† (Womack 4). Poe’s â€Å"Cask of Amontillado† is portrayed as Ame rican Gothic Literature by the narrating of a vindictive storyteller just as the dull setting that is depicted. In conclusion, in Edgar Allan Poe’s â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado,† dull setting is depicted using a medieval jamboree to hold fast to the American Gothic Literature custom. To start this short story, the merry setting of a medieval jamboree is depicted â€Å"they strolled in the midst of the plastered and mirth.† (Poe 1). The fair is a significant, unexpected portrayal of Poe’s turned plots in which he passes on dread to his crowd. Poe strays from a prototypical despairing setting related withâ the American Gothic Literature custom. â€Å"You could never anticipate that a story of debilitated retribution should occur simultaneously as a happy creation carnival† (Palmer 3). Some other setting illustrative of shrewdness is depicted in Poe’s work through the disconnection of the tombs. â€Å"We went through a scope of low curves, slid, passed on, and slipped, showed up at a profound tomb wherein the revoltingness of the air caused our fire beat lights to become the flame† (Poe 3). Poe’s utilization of symbolism while depicting the tombs molds a scene of confinement and sadness basic among short stories named Ameri can Gothic Literature. The utilization of a profound underground tomb is utilized to depict evil setting and the disorder of approaching demise. â€Å"I busied myself among the heap of bones†¦. a progression of noisy and piercing shouts busted abruptly from the throat of the anchored form† (Poe 6). The second depicted in the statement is Fortunato’s acknowledgment that he will pass on as the departure to his tomb is progressively fixed. â€Å"Poe’s work it could be said places the peruser in the shoes of the casualty in the tomb. As they experience dread, frenzy and fury in their last snapshots of struggle† (Moore 2). Poe’s utilization of setting in â€Å"The Cask of Amontialldo† is prototype to the American Gothic Literature custom, utilizing the setting to additionally make a feeling of persona and disquiet. To close, Edgar Allan Poe is simply an ace of The American Gothic Literature Tradition. He uses the prototypical components of imagery, a vindictive character, and a frightful setting to cling to the particular convention of The AGLT (American Gothic Literature Tradition). Poe’s abuse of imagery passes on basic messages about the short story’s plot and characters. Poe’s predominance over the idea of having an insecure and wrathful hero tempts the peruser to peruse on. At long last, Poe’s utilization of a fair as a setting is a debilitated wind, a spot where one expects cheer is subbed with a spot where vengeance is taken. It is sheltered to assume that Poe’s life of dissatisfaction,

The Representation of Women in Heart of Darkness - Free Essay Example

In the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad the main character, Marlow encounters women when most needed in the book. When meeting other imperialists, such as Kurtz, who only cares about himself and his riches, Marlow gains hope as to become like these men, well respected explorers and imperialists. One early critic of the novel, Edward Garnett, wrote in his review that [Heart of Darkness] is simply a Women are viewed by Marlow as ignorant little creatures above the press of imperialism†completely innocent, but entirely unaware. Heart of Darkness makes readers aware of the perceptions of women in the late 1800s, early 1900s. The main descriptions are that women are naive and should be kept that way, purely sexual objects, or rich by their husbands. The naive one is Kurtz intended. While she is only in a relatively small amount of the book, she is portrayed as naive and Marlow feels the need to keep her that way. He does this as if to protect her. We dont even know enough about this character to understand Marlowrs decision to lie to her is even necessary or not. The women who is personified as the sex object is none other than Kurtz mistress. She is beautiful and is covered in ivory, making her seem powerful and mysterious. Her entire purpose as a character in the book is to show how Kurtz is unable to control his lusts. The fact that he has a mistress and an intended shows that Kurtz thinks the intended is naive enough to think hell wait for her until he gets back. The mistress does not speak even furthering the point that she is used as an object and not a human being. She also seems to have a kind of control over men since she is so powerful and alluring. Marlowrs aunt is rich and widowed, meaning that her husband probably left her with a lot of money. She seems to have nothing useful to do with her money and she believes very heavily in imperialism. She thinks the world would be better for it, making her naive. She also is the one who gets Marlow the job, making her powerful. With these descriptions, she seems to be a combination of the two other females previously talked about in this book. None of the women in this book have names. All they have is their association to the male characters in the book. The only importance women seem to have is to further the plot or characterization for the men. Africa is written as setting and backdrop which eliminates the African as human factor. Africa as a metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity, into which the wandering European enters at his peril (Achebe). Conrad brings together the idea of savages in Africa and the general women together. By doing this Conrad addresses the two victims of imperialistic, white, male power. Marlow brings the two victims of imperialism together in one, brief observation of Mr. Kurtzrs foreign mistress. Conradrs concise description of an Amazonian woman on page 56 is as follows: She was savage and superb, wild-eyed and magnificent; there was something ominous and stately in her deliberate progress Her long shadow fell to the waterrs edge. Her face had a tragic and fierce aspect of wild sorrow and of dumb pain mingled with the fear of some struggling, half-shaped resolve. She stood looking at us without a stir, and like the wilderness itself, with an air of brooding over an inscrutable purpose Women and the savages are brought together under one umbrella of mingled patronization and awe. In this respect, Marlowrs view of women is the perfect oxymoron (Sedlak). Marlowrs tone concerning women and the Amazon is reverent, but belittling. These two groups of people are sub-human to Marlow in that he considers them of a lesser intellect and lesser value. Heart of Darkness, while a classic, reveals itself to have themes about women that make them out to be, naive, a object used for sex, and wealthy due to men. These statements are inaccurate now, but reflected the time period in which Conrad wrote and how they perceived women. Everybody in the book is flawed, how could we expect anything else but flawed women?

Answer: Introduction DS Holdings is a public company based in Australia; the company is holding company of Dick Smith Group that has 11 subsidiaries (Dick Smith- Annual Report, 2014). The business organization operates in consumer electronic retail stores and also online consumer electronics retails throughout Australia and New Zealand. The business organization has a reach up to 390 locations with a huge workforce (Chung, 2016). The company was owned by Woolworths from 1982 and later was acquired by Anchorage. The famous brand name Dick Smith was liquidized in the year 2016 causing a massive loss to its investors and shareholders. However the company marked profit in the year 2014-15 and has also provided huge amount of dividend to its investors. The plan for expansion however caused hurdle and the company went on making losses (Chung, 2016). The report tries to analyze the organization on a broader view. The company was later purchased by Kogan.com and it is also speculated that to get listed in Austra lian Stock Exchange the company has hyped the amount. The report aims to provide a broader and wide view in relation to the company and factors that has played an important role in its success. The various problems such as the ethical problem faced by the business organization are also discussed in the report. Brief Review of Dick Smith In the year 1968, Dick Smith established a company which came to be known as Dick Smith Company in Sydney, Australia. With a small initial capital, it started its business focusing on installing car radios. The company gradually expanded its business by entering into different products and established approximately 20 stores throughout Australia. The major shares of Dick Smith were sold to Woolworths during 1980. The remaining shareholding was also owned by Woolworths. After getting major shares of the company Woolworths decided to restructure the brand Dick Smith, but later it closed some 100 stores of the brand in Australia (Dick Smith- Annual Report, 2014). This action of Woolworths also brought another surprise for Dick Smith. Woolworths sold Dick Smith to Anchorage Capital Partner for $115 million (Anchorage Capital Partners, 2017). In November 2012, the company appointed Nick Abboud as its chief executive. After the appointment, Dick Smith got listed in the Australian Stock exc hange in the year 2012, which increased its net worth. nobody have ever realized that a company who went on setting profits mark could collapse suddenly, however this happened, the company went into losses and collapsed in the year 2016. The major reason behind its situation was the disputed administration. The board of directors of the company and the investors didnt reach at a point of agreement so they chose different personalities each representing their groups. The board of directors of the company appoints McGrath Nicol, while the investors appointed Ferrier Hodgson as receiver. Today the brand Dick Smith is owned by Kogan.com, which sold its product online. Kogan.com acquired the company in 2016 (West, 2016). Assessing the Valuation of Dick Smith The brand Dick Smith was acquired by Woolworths in the year 2016, it was being purchased by Anchorage Capital Partners at an initial capital of $20 million. In the year 2013, the shares of Dick Smith were floated in the Australian Stock Exchange. The Annual reports of the company disclosed that in the previous one year the EBITDA of the brand Dick Smith got increased which not a good sign for a healthy company. It has been assessed that the rise in EBITDA was due to carelessness and irregularities in the management of inventory (Dick Smith- Annual Report, 2014). The annual reports didnt show the value for the assets which have been write off. However the depreciation in the inventory was declared which was $58 million (Chung, 2016). Noncurrent provisions were written off with $58 million and all the required was done carefully and judged as fair. In a short duration of 7 months the poor management of the inventory lead to the further decline of the same, the inventory got declined by $171 million in the year 2013. In the year 2014, the total depreciation was only $10 million because plants, equipments and other assets were written down in the year 2013. In addition to this, it has also been observed that loans and other borrowings of the Dick Smith got increased in the year 2015, which was not reported in the balance sheet of the year 2014. The loans got increased by $70.5 million. This was quite unusual as the scrutiny of the reports of the year 2015 showed everything normal and fair. At the same time, when the case of the company was assessed quite closely, it was noticed that the debt ratio of the company was 67% which didnt indicate a sound business practice (Walker, 2016). The percentage of debt ratio i.e. 67% was quite high and termed risky for business operations. In the year 2015, Dick Smith was not able to arrange its short term debts because of the poor working capital. Apart from this, the inventory turnover ratio was also examined which didnt showed any significance increase in its profits from the year 2014. The whole business operations and other functions of the company was mismanaged, the staff of the company was also not working efficiently due to no long leaves were given to the employee in the year 2015, this has laid a great impact on the efficiency and productivity of the employees (White, 2016). The top level management of the company has also announced the breakdown in the prices of the products of the company. Apart from this they also announced that the company has failed in its operations in the year 2015. All these announcements lead to sudden decline in the prices of the shares of the company in the Australian Stock Exchange. Thus whole of these processes has severely impacted the productivity and efficiency of the company . When it comes to initial public offerings, DSE source has been added in the balance sheets of the company so that manipulation can be done. Apart from this, the profits and losses of the company were also not assessed properly. This shows that the people with higher ranks in the top management didnt paid attention to increase the performance of the company in the market. Its been reported that the accounts andfinances of the company was not audited from 2010-2014 that created an atmosphere of mistrust in the investors and auditors (Ong and Janda, 2016). They developed a kind of suspicion regarding the authenticity of the accounts. All these activities confronts that the company Dick Smith was not operating properly, it was not following the accounting standards and has not recorded its financial statements from 2010-2014. Anchorage Capital Partners and its Ethical Dilemma The company Anchorage Capital Partners is situated in Australia and is a private equity firm, it majorly focuses on turnovers and revenue generation (Anchorage Capital Partner, 2016). It has take over Dick Smith in the year 2012 from Woolworths and paid $115 million in total. Dick Smith got listed in Australian Stock Exchange in the year 2012. However the company lost the trust of investors and various stakeholders because it has presented documents and accounts which were completely mismatched. One of them was the poor management of the inventory, due to which the EBITDA was the company raised. In addition to this the debt of the company was also increased and in lack of the short term debt, the top level management of the company declared that the company is operating in losses. The company also failed to record their financial statements from the last 4 years which developed mistrust among its stakeholders. Anchorage capital partner is a profit making company, which increases the profit of shareholders irrespective of their investment (Anchorage Capital Partner, 2016). The company is working not only for those which are listed in the stick exchange but also for the medium and small sized companies. It uses equity shares as a means of operation. In addition to this, it has been seen that such firms severely deducts the assets to show an increment in the profit margin of the company. The top management was quite satisfied with the performance of the Dick Smith and they were hoping for more investment in the company in future. The financial statements presented by the company were not valid as several figures mentioned in the books were not clear and their proper source was also missing. In addition to this, the unaudited accounts of the company was also recovered which shows that the company has not audited its accounts from 2010-2014 (Wright, 2016). All these activities show that serious carelessness an irresponsible behavior of the management leads to the decline of the Dick Smith. The financial statements showed by the company were a mere attempt to influence its shareholders and investors. Deloitte has played a significant role in the liquidation process of the Dick Smith. The company claimed that the financial statements were prepared with utmost care and is also in compliance with the accounting standards. However it was observed that the future prospects of the company was not listed and previous operations were also not present. Deloitte was working on the project as accounts auditor, after three days of proper observation it ceased the accounts of Dick Smith. Deloitte observed that the top level management who have opted a clear irresponsible behavior towards its shareholders and investors. The company has not made any effort in increasing the sources of finances, apart from this they has also not showed their sources in the financial statements (Boyd, 2016). They were trying to maintain the fake performance of the company in the market so that in order to impress its stakeholders and investors. Deloitte observed that the senior executives of the company has not l aid down their future courses of action and the ways through which they can improve the goodwill and share prices of the company. Deloitte ceased the subsidiaries of Dick Smith after properly analyzing the financial statements of the company. In addition to this National Australian Bank and HSBC Bank of Australia with major shareholders AMP was also ceased. Thus it is evident that the suspicion of the shareholders and investors won against the fake reports and financial statements of the company (The Dick Smith Group, 2016). Conclusion The report provides a wide spectrum in the case of Dick Smith, it is observed from the report that mismanagement on every level was responsible for the liquidation of the Dick Smith. Poor management and some false representation of financial accounts have laid to the decline of the company in the year 2015. The company is presently operating under Kagon.com in which it is selling its products online (Dick Smith- Annual Report, 2014). The sudden increase in the share prices of the company leads to suspicion in the investors of the company. The sudden increase of share prices from $115 million to $520 million in Australian Stock Exchange in a year attracted the attention of the stakeholders. The major cause behind the loss of the company was the poor management of the inventory and writing of assets from huge amount (The Dick Smith Group, 2016). In addition to this, the company has also not audited its accounts for four years. The financial statements and accounts books showed no prope r sources of finance. In this case, Deloitte played a quite significant role in assessing the operations and functions of the company. In addition to this it also concluded that a company named Anchorage capital partner was also present which deals in increasing the profits of the company by severely reducing its assets. This is done so that shareholders can be impressed and they invest in the company. This is done by the company to attract more finances. As per the annual financial reports the top level management was also involved in the misrepresentation of accounts. Thus it can be concluded that various factors such as poor management of inventory and misleading facts were the major causes behind the liquidation of the Dick Smith.
